Heart Disease - how did that happen?! (part 2 of 3)
So, you think I'm going to quickly give you top tips for reducing your cholesterol?! Not so fast! You need to know what got you into this mess in the first place!
Dr. Tomas Dayspring MD FACP FNLA NCMP is one of the USA's leading lipidologists. In other words, he knows a hell of a lot about fat and cholesterol and all things related to it and is highly regarded in his field. Basically,...he's really worth listening to. Here is a quote from his findings...

It has been recently concluded that the main driving force for many metabolic issues including heart disease, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases is as a direct consequence to your intake of sugar and how you body copes with it!
Yummmmm, carby sugary porridge!!!
Now the next bit is a little nerdy. I've tried to keep it non-medical and not too technical. But persist! Its all learning!
HERE'S HOW ALL THE CARBS/SUGAR WORKS IN YOUR BODY...
When we eat carbohydrate foods (fruits, honey, refined sugars, rice, pasta, bread, oats, grains, biscuits, cakes...you know the ones), the body triggers the release of insulin. This process is also needed, but to a much lesser extent when we eat protein, and when we eat fat,...no insulin response is needed (remember that bit ok! Read it again if you have to...think about it). So when you eat these carby foods...here's what happens...
Your pancreas, nestled in your gut, secretes lots of hormones, one of which is insulin, and a whole host of signalling happens in our cells...all 37 trillion of them!
Depending on the type of carbohydrate, it gets used up differently. Glucose is one type of carb sugar and gets absorbed in the stomach and around the body. Fructose (from fruit, juices, honey etc) is a different kettle of fish and is half glucose and half fructose and so needs the liver to help out with all the processing involved.
When we eat lots of fructose (5 a day anyone?) the body releases more insulin and can tend to make the body more insulin resistant! Now...a word of note here: Its a case of too much of a good thing. 1 or even 2 pieces of fruit (berries, and lower sugar fruit) is ok if you're healthy, active and well, and a good bodyweight. If you need to loose weight and have metabolic issues, then its not ok.
SO WHAT HAPPENS TO ALL THIS INSULIN THEN?
You cells are like an an email inbox. At some stage its going to get too full. Your emails are not going to get read and the frustrated sender who isn't getting any reply, is forced to resend and resend in an attempt to get you to open the email and use it and reply back! Its a self-preservation attempt by the cells. It can only handle so much sugar so it resists the excess. And thus we have "Insulin Resistance".
But the pancreas doesn't really know what the craic is. For a while, maybe a few years, its happy spiting out the insulin to handle all this excess glucose and fructose...but its all day every day. Theres not weekends off or bank holidays! It also knows the insulin isn't getting absorbed into the cells, so like the frustrated emailer, just sends out more and more and more! The fancy pants term for this is "hyperinsulinemia".
The pancreas is out of control, your glucose is floating around in your blood scraping the artery walls, causing havoc on your hormones, your waistline, your moods and everything else. And before you know it, you're having to go to the loo 5 times a night and the doctors says you're pre-diabetic...or worse, you've given yourself full blown type 2 diabetes.
Ladies and gentlemen, we now have a named disease...pick a term you like; Metabolic Syndrome, Insulin Resistance Syndrome (the latest term being used), Syndrome X, Diabetes t2, etc. Google any of them, and see the list of diseases associated with them including
OBESITY - CANCER - STROKE - ATHEROSCLEROSIS - CORONARY HEART DISEASE -
ALZHEIMERS - FATTY LIVER DISEASE - ASTHMA - ARTHRITIS etc. etc. etc....
Know anyone with any of these? I know plenty.
SO YOUR DOC TESTED YOU FOR DIABETES, AND YOU'RE FINE? GREAT....but....(the sciency bit)
Dr. Joseph Kraft MS FCAP - chairman of the Dept. Clinical Pathology and Nuclear Medicine dissected A LOT of hearts! He personally did 3000 autopsies (!!!) and did over 15000 insulin assays on humans of all walks of life, just to make sure he was right! His technique was to measure the insulin response rather than the blood glucose reading over a number of hours. In 2015 (how recent!) a report was released that said this: When tested the regular way, it was reported that 49% - 52% of Americans are now pre-diabetic or diabetic. However, using Krafts testing technique, it was actually 60-65%! That's pretty significant! But this is just a tiny bit of information. He did way more tests and conclusion after conclusion all reflected the fact that people who were not being properly tested were essentially going undiagnosed and dying before they were supposed to. Getting the all clear is not an indicator of perfect health using the traditional testing methods.
In a nutshell...

This is his theory and his opinion after years of research, testing and more testing. It may not be completely correct, but it might be. And right now it sounds very very accurate.
So, this post isn't very helpful is it? Especially as you can really only get these types of bloods done in the states (as far as I know).
So, what can you do? Manage your diet? Move to the states to get all the tests done? Manage your stress? Stop putting sugar in your tea? Stop eating fruit? Stop smoking? Yeah probably all those and more...but more importantly...
